What is PolyWorks|Inspector, and why use it with an Artec scanner?

PolyWorks|Inspector is 3D dimensional analysis and quality control software from InnovMetric Software. In an Artec workflow it does the job Artec Studio does not: it takes the scan you have already captured and processed, aligns it to a CAD model or a reference part, and evaluates every dimension and GD&T control against tolerance. Then it publishes the result as an inspection report a customer or auditor will accept.

The sequence is simple. Scan the part with an Artec scanner. Clean and fuse the data in Artec Studio. Export a mesh or point cloud into PolyWorks|Inspector, align, measure, and report. 3DMakerWorld supplies the scanner, the software license and the training as one package, and supports all three from Illinois and Kansas.

Where the line falls: Artec Studio captures, cleans and can compare. PolyWorks|Inspector judges, with datum reference frames, tolerance zones, standards-based GD&T, repeatable multi-piece routines and formal reporting. If all you need is a quick visual deviation map, Artec Studio may already cover it, and we will tell you so.

From Artec scan to inspection report

Artec scanners are contact-free and target-free, so parts that would need fixturing, targets or hours of CMM programming are digitized in minutes. PolyWorks|Inspector turns that data into a tolerance verdict.

📷
STEP 1

Capture with an Artec scanner

Micro II for small precision parts at 5-micron accuracy, Spider II for complex geometry and sharp edges, Point II for metrology-grade laser capture on difficult surfaces, Leo for large parts scanned wirelessly on the shop floor. No contact with the part.

🧹
STEP 2

Process in Artec Studio

Align, fuse and clean the scan with automated algorithms, one-click Workflows or Autopilot. Export a measurement-ready polygonal mesh or point cloud, with no format conversion between the two applications.

📄
STEP 3

Inspect and report

Align the scan to CAD, apply dimensional and GD&T controls, review deviation color maps, then publish the report, the FAI package, or the multi-piece statistics that prove the process is stable.

What PolyWorks|Inspector does with an Artec scan

At the core is an inspection engine with parametric data handling and algorithms certified by Germany's PTB, the national metrology institute. Parametric means every step is recorded, so the same inspection replays identically on the next part and on the next batch next year.

🧲

Alignment that holds up

Best-fit a scanned surface or cross-section to nominal, constrained in rotation, translation or within a tolerance zone. Build alignments from features, datum targets, surface points or edge points, with weights and axial constraints.

📐

Smart GD&T

Built on current ASME and ISO standards, with datum feature patterns, composite datum features, datum targets, material condition and datum modifiers, and radial, slab-like, unequal bilateral and unilateral tolerance zones.

🌈

Deviation color maps

Surface, boundary, cross-sectional and thickness deviations as color maps. Full-surface coverage exposes warp, springback and tooling wear that a handful of measured points would miss.

📏

Measure with or without CAD

Extract dimensions straight from the scan, with nominals from CAD or a golden reference part. Feature-based dimensioning covers diameter, position and orientation, plus distances and angles in 2D or 3D.

🌀

Profile, flush & gap, airfoil

Evaluate fillets, feature lines and sheet metal assemblies for radius, angle, bending, sharpness, flush and gap. The optional airfoil module measures fan, compressor and turbine blades.

🔁

Repeatable multi-piece inspection

Build the inspection once, then replay it on every part with Play Inspection and the Sequence Editor. Macro scripting hooks the routine into your own systems.

📊

Reporting reviewers accept

Control views group hundreds of controls into logical sets. Publish AS9102 and PPAP First Article Inspection reports to Excel with PolyWorks|ReportLoop, or export to PDF, Word and HTML.

📈

SPC and measurement system analysis

Multi-piece statistics, trend charts and statistical color maps are computed automatically. Repeatability and Gauge R&R studies qualify the measurement process itself.

🗂️

MBD / PMI import

GD&T controls come in from native CAD and QIF MBD files through optional translators, so tolerances are not re-keyed by hand.

Frequently asked questions

How is PolyWorks|Inspector different from Artec Studio?▾

Artec Studio captures and processes scan data: registration, fusion, mesh cleanup, texture and comparison. PolyWorks|Inspector evaluates that finished data against a specification: full ASME and ISO GD&T, datum reference frames, tolerance zones, repeatable multi-piece routines and formal inspection reports. Most customers own both and run them in sequence. If you only need a visual deviation map, Artec Studio may already be enough, and we would rather say so than sell you a second license.

Which PolyWorks|Inspector package do I need for Artec scan data?▾

Standard or Premium, the two packages that include point cloud digitizing and meshing. Standard covers scan-based inspection completely. Premium adds PolyWorks|Modeler Standard, which fits NURBS surfaces over a scanned mesh for CAD work, and carries CMM capability you only need if you run a coordinate measuring machine. The other packages are probing and gauge-collection tools and do not apply to Artec workflows.

How does Artec scan data get into PolyWorks|Inspector?▾

Process the scan in Artec Studio, export it as a polygonal mesh or point cloud, and import it into PolyWorks|Inspector, which reads 38 point cloud and mesh formats. No conversion utility or third-party bridge is needed. Your CAD nominal comes in through IGES or STEP, or through an optional native translator for CATIA, NX, Creo, Inventor or SOLIDWORKS, which also brings in the PMI so tolerances do not have to be re-keyed.

What is the difference between a node-locked and a floating license?▾

A node-locked license is tied to a USB dongle. The software runs on whichever machine holds the dongle, so it moves between computers one at a time, the right choice for a single dedicated inspection workstation. A floating network license is served from your network and checked out by any seat that needs it, so a team can share fewer licenses across shifts, departments or sites. Floating costs more per license; whether it pays off depends on how many people need the software at the same moment.

How much does PolyWorks|Inspector cost?▾

Pricing depends on the package, the optional modules and the license type. Because configurations vary this widely, InnovMetric does not publish list pricing. Send us your application through the form below and we will return a written quote.

Is scan data accurate enough for real GD&T inspection?▾

It depends on the tolerance and the scanner. Artec Micro II resolves to 5 microns and Artec Point II to 0.02 mm, which supports genuinely tight work; Leo and Eva at roughly 0.1 mm suit larger parts and looser features. Scanning excels at full-surface characterization (profile, warp, flush and gap, form deviation) and is the wrong tool for a bore diameter held to a few microns. Send us a drawing and we will tell you which controls a scanner can defend and which it cannot.

Does it support GD&T to ASME Y14.5 and ISO GPS?▾

Yes. The GD&T engine implements algorithms prescribed by both the ASME and ISO standards, and you choose which standard a project follows. It supports datum feature patterns, composite datum features, datum targets, material condition and datum modifiers, and radial, slab-like, unequal bilateral and unilateral tolerance zones.

Can it produce AS9102 First Article Inspection reports from a scan?▾

Yes. Measure a piece from the first production run and transfer the results automatically into AS9102 and PPAP-compliant Excel templates using PolyWorks|ReportLoop. Reports also export to PDF, Word and HTML.

Can I reuse the same inspection on every part in a batch?▾

Yes, and this is where the software pays for itself. Build the inspection once, then replay it with the Play Inspection tool and Sequence Editor on each subsequent scan. Multi-piece statistics accumulate automatically, so you get trend charts and process capability data instead of a folder of one-off reports.

What computer do I need to run it alongside Artec Studio?▾

A 64-bit Windows 10 or 11 Pro workstation with a professional OpenGL graphics card. InnovMetric's minimum is a quad-core CPU with 8 GB RAM; for dense Artec scan data, treat their recommended configuration (an i7-class CPU, 32 GB RAM or more, and an NVIDIA RTX or Quadro professional card) as the practical starting point. Consumer GeForce cards and ARM processors are not supported.

Do you provide training and support?▾

Yes. Every package includes one year of InnovMetric support and maintenance, plus two complimentary seats at a basic classroom training session (travel and lodging are yours). On top of that, 3DMakerWorld provides U.S.-based application support. We run Artec scanners in our own service bureau, so you are calling people who use this workflow, not a switchboard.

Can I try it before buying?▾

Yes. Contact us and we will arrange an evaluation or a live demo. Sending us a scan and the CAD file of a part you actually inspect is the fastest way to know whether it solves your problem.

Can you just do the inspection for us?▾

Yes. 3DMakerWorld runs an Artec-based 3D scanning and inspection service bureau. For a one-off validation, a warranty dispute or a supplier problem, we can scan the part and deliver the inspection report without you buying anything.

Get pricing, or a demo on your own scan
